In order to better to monitor the water quality, 1.3 million RMB has been furnished by the central government (Environment monitor department) to ensure the people in this area can drink the clean water.

It is reported that right after the earthquake, Yunnan Province Department of Environmental Protection has started the emergency monitoring plan, considering the major parameters of the earthquake zone, especially the main sources of pollution and the surrounding environmental features, an instant convention was agreed, which is called "Lu dian County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province 8 • 03 earthquake environmental emergency monitoring plan ". It is the official instruction for all the concerning department, to guide them how to cooperate. Heavy metals, acute toxicity monitoring equipment was then provided for this area for examining the environmental situation.

Up until August 5, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, Department of Environmental Protection Organization Environmental Monitoring Station has examined the following indicators in the earthquake zone and the downstream zone: heavy metals, toxic and hazardous substances (ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, copper, zinc, fluoride, arsenic, cadmium, chromium)

The monitoring results will be referenced by
• "groundwater environmental quality standards" (GB / T14848-93) Ⅲ class standard
• Surface water Environment quality Standards "(GB3838-2002) Ⅱ standard.
According to the preliminary monitoring results, in the earthquake and downstream zone, drinking water and surface water stay safety.

They have no significant changes so far, heavy metals and toxic substances remain in the normal scope, no abnormal changes have yet occurred. Compared to the water quality before the earthquake, almost it remains unchanged. The only difference occurred is some of these regions, they have excessive ammonia, which is mainly caused by continuous rainfall after the earthquake.

These emergency monitoring system is active for all 24hous each day, sampling, analysis, emergency monitoring are the major 3 procedures.
